|
9. Doll/Bear/Balloon Crib Quilt - 1930s - 44" x 53"
This is thought to be a Bucilla kit from the 1930's when they put
out kits with tinted motifs and designs to be embroidered. Found in
a junk store in New Orleans years ago with the blue checkered and
hot pink fabric attached to make it into a twin size. Unfortunately
where the balloons are now was a large swatch of oil based white
house paint. No soaking could remove it after so many years. Since
it was originally made to be a crib top, Judi Fibush cut down the
fabric borders, added balloons to cover the paint and finished it as
a crib size in 1996. It is hand quilted in 10 spi in blue thread.

18. Drum Major/Drummer Teddy Bear Crib
Coverlet - 1930's - 32' x 42"
This is probably a Vogart design from the 1930's although not
documented. It was hand tinted in tan for the bear's face, arms, and
legs and a bright red for the coat, hat and drum and beautifully
embroidered in black, blue, gold around the coat and pale green.
Fading of both colors is seen especially in the tan areas. The bear is 24" tall which makes
this an unusually large motif. A small hole was excellently patched
near the base of the drum on the right lower side and a very few
tiny blue embroidery stitches are missing but still a delightful and
adorable coverlet for a crib.

20. Tug of War Crib Quilt - 1930's -
35” by 42”
This is a Bucilla crib quilt kit made in the 1930s - pattern
number unknown. It was found in a yard sale worse off than can be
imagined with all the applique poorly done and mostly coming off, no
embroidery features on the figures, 3 holes in the center of the
piece and a very ragged red binding had been crudely attached. As a
piece that needed total restoration all the appliqued pieces were
removed, saved and reattached in the places marked on the top.
Embroidery was done to complete the faces and the 3 holes were
darned to prevent further enlargement. A thin vintage blue flannel
back (no batting) was added, quilted and a new red binding was
attached.
